TWAS awards and fellowships

The World Academy of Sciences (TWAS) is a global science academy based in Trieste, Italy, working to advance science and engineering for sustainable prosperity in the developing world.

TWAS-ICCBS Fellowships
The International Centre for Chemical and Biological Sciences (ICCBS) in Karachi, Pakistan, and TWAS are offering fellowships to young scientists from developing countries (other than Pakistan) who wish to pursue a PhD or Postdoctoral research in biotechnology. ICCBS will provide a monthly stipend which should be used to cover living costs such as food, accommodation, local transportation and incidental minor illness.

PhD fellowships
Applicants must be registered for a PhD degree in their home country in order to apply for the fellowship. The fellowship may be granted for a minimum period of 6 months and a maximum period to be decided with ICCBS.

Postdoctoral fellowships
The postdoctoral fellowships are tenable for a minimum period of six months to a maximum period of twelve months.

TWAS-NRF Fellowships
TWAS and South Africa’s National Research Foundation (NRF) and Department of Science and Technology (DST) are offering Doctoral Fellowships to young scholars from developing countries (other than South Africa) who wish to pursue a PhD degree at research institutions in South Africa. The fellowships are tenable for a maximum period of three years. Note: before submitting an application form, applicants must contact institutions in South Africa or potential supervisors to obtain a placement and must have all qualifications from non-South Africa universities evaluated by the South African Qualification Authority (information available at https://www.saqa.org.za/). To create and complete an application form, applicants must be registered on the NRF system. The instructions are in the Application and Funding Guide for 2021 academic year.

TWAS-BIOTEC Postdoctoral Fellowships
TWAS-BIOTEC Postdoctoral Fellowships are tenable at the National Center for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology (BIOTEC) and its affiliated research units for a period of 12 to 24 months and are awarded to young scientists from developing countries, other than Thailand.

TWAS-CUI Fellowships
TWAS in partnership with COMSATS University Islamabad (CUI) is offering fellowships to young scientists from developing countries other than Pakistan. CUI will provide a monthly stipend for the purpose of covering living costs such as food, accommodation, and health insurance. The monthly stipend will not be convertible into foreign currency. The language of instruction is English.

Postgraduate Fellowships
PhD Sandwich or full-time schemes are available in natural sciences (Structural, Cell and Molecular Biology or Biological Systems and Organisms)
Duration: minimum 6 months, maximum 3 years, up to 18 months for a sandwich programme

This fellowship is for postdoctoral research in natural sciences (Structural, Cell and Molecular Biology or Biological Systems and Organisms).

TWAS-DBT Fellowships
TWAS and the Department of Biotechnology of the Ministry of Science and Technology in India (DBT) have established a fellowship programme for foreign scholars from developing countries who wish to pursue a PhD or postdoctoral research in biotechnology.
PhD Fellowships
Full-time fellowships (for those register for a PhD at a university in India) are granted for an initial period of up to 3 years. They may be extended for a further 2 years, subject to the student’s performance. Sandwich fellowships (for those registered for a PhD in their home country) may be granted for a minimum period of 12 months and a maximum period of 2 years.
